Agriculture Teacher

I completed this assignment for my Content Area Literacy Class.  I found an article relating to Agricultural Education and determined the appropriate text frame for the article to be read in.  I determined that the article should be read in the Problem/Solution Frame.  I completed the necessary questions after reading the article and then developed a graphic organizer using the computer program Inspiration.  I did this on two articles and received a 9 out of 10 on the assignment.

I’m Glad They Found Nemo, but Fish are Food!

This article by Wm. Jay Jackman is from News & Views and is best read in the Problem/Solution Frame.

What is the problem?
The problem is “people in our society have little to no understanding of the food and fiber system that sustains us all.”

Who has the problem?
Many people in our society have this problem. This article focuses mainly on children?

What is causing the problem?
The problem is caused by society sending mixed messages through movies, commercials and promotions by businesses such as McDonald’s.

What are the effects of the problem?
The effect is that children see animals as pets and friends and not as the source of their food. They don’t understand the food and fiber system.

Who is trying to solve the problem?
In this article, no one in particular is trying to solve the problem. The author is challenging agricultural educators to help solve the problem.

What solutions are recommended or attempted?
The author urges us (agricultural educators) to communicate the right message to people. When we participate in activities such as petting zoos, we need to inform the children of the purposes of the animals.

What results from these solutions?
The results will be children and a society who understand where their food comes from. It will achieve the goal that is mentioned in the article, “All students are conversationally literate in agriculture, food, fiber, and natural resources systems.”

Is the problem solved?
The problem is not solved because of this article. This article is written as “food for thought” for agricultural educators.

Do any new problems develop because of the solutions?
I don’t see any new problems developing from the solution. I think the solution produces very positive results.
