Course Descriptions

MNGT 700 - Organizational Theory and Behavior

3 credit hours
Organizational Theory and Behavior introduces students to perspectives developed to understand and evaluate the functioning of complex organizations. In addition to theories, organizational dynamics such as employee, motivation, the quality of worklife, decision-making, organization change, and development are explored. Students will reflect upon the value of these theories and practices to an organization with which they are familiar.

MNGT 701 - Leadership and Ethics

3 credit hours
This course is designed to provide foundational information on leadership and to assist students to enhance leadership competencies in their professional life. The course explores conceptions and theories of leadership, both historical and current, and applies theories through case studies and simulations. Assessment of leadership competencies, practice in utilizing competencies, analyses of leadership challenges, and synthesis of experience and theory will serve to enhance the leadership abilities of students.

MNGT 702 - Strategy and Marketing

3 credit hours
The strategy portion of the course covers environment scanning, intra-organizational analysis, positioning the organization so that success is enhanced, and integration of the strategic plan throughout the organization. The marketing portion covers product and service development, pricing, distribution, and promotion. The role of marketing in implementing the strategy and marketing’s relationship to the other functions of the organization are included in extensive coverage of e-commerce.

MNGT 703 - Human Resource Management

3 credit hours
This course will cover human resources functions in the modern business organization. These functions include recruiting, training and development, compensation, benefits, and planning for future employee needs. It will emphasize the importance of the human resource department’s role in the accomplishment of company objectives. It will provide an in-depth look at the major human resource functions, the strategies and tactics of how those functions are performed and the role and relationship of human resource managers and the rest of the organization. Emphasis will be on the application of the material to real situations that the student will encounter in the organization.

MNGT 704 - Fundamentals of Business Law

2 credit hours
To acquaint practitioners who do not have legal training with fundamental principles and develop core competencies in the areas of labor/employment law and contract law so they may apply them in a business setting. Students will become familiar with collective bargaining principles and laws. Concurrently, students will become familiar with various employment regulations affecting both the unionized and non-unionized workplace. Students will become familiar with the basic elements of contracts, the many forms of contracts, and how to read and interpret many types of contractual agreements. Students will also gain some knowledge concerning the history and development of each of the areas of law covered.

MNGT 705 - Operations, Project, and Quality Management

3 credit hours
To give the student a background in operations concepts while emphasizing the subjects of project management and quality. Specifically the students will:

  • Learn to manually do both CPM and PERT calculations for project scheduling.
  • Learn to use a project management software package.
  • Learn the philosophy of the top 3 quality “Gurus”.
  • Learn the generic tools of Total Quality Management.
  • Learn about statistical methods in quality (sampling plans, SPC, Process Capability).
  • Learn the importance of an operations strategy.

Prerequisite: MNGT 700 - Org. Theory and Behavior and MNGT 709 Statistics.

MNGT 706 - Financial Management

3 credit hours

  • Financial Management provides a user’s perspective to business finance through four important objectives:
  • Using financial information to make informed managerial decisions.
  • Determining where businesses should invest their capital.
  • Determining how businesses should finance these investments.
  • Determining financial needs and how to raise capital on a cost-effective basis.

Prerequisite: Familiarity with elementary accounting concepts (See the Instructor)

MNGT 709 - Statistics

3 credit hours
Statistics 709 is designed to enhance the statistical skills of employees and managers of various business firms. Students are also exposed to Information Technology (i.e., spreadsheet and statistical software).

MNGT 710 - Practicum

2 credit hours
Practicum is the capstone course in the Masters of Management curriculum. In this course, students are provided an opportunity to synthesize and draw upon material and competencies gained through the required course curriculum in the completion of an independent research project that incorporates investigative methods and approaches used in organizational research and managerial practice.

MNGT 720 – Strategy and Organizational Performance

3 credit hours
This course will examine the elements needed to formulate and implement business and corporate level strategies. The focus will be upon organizational performance and the primary and support activities needed for successful implementation to create a competitive advantage for the firm. Both corporate and small business strategies will be discussed. This is a capstone course and will require the student to synthesize material from previous courses.

Prerequisites: MNGT 700 Org. Theory & Behavior, MNGT 702 Strategy & Marketing, MNGT 706 Financial Management, MNGT 705 Operations, Project, and Quality Management

MNGT 789 – Special Topic One Credit Elective Courses

3 credits total Special topic one-credit courses are designed to give flexibility to the MM program. Students can select from the one-credit courses that are offered each term to meet this three-credit requirement. Examples of special topics in the 2005-06 academic year include Managing Change, Systems Thinking, and Strategic Management for Small Business.
