Facilities Management Alerts

Spring/Summer 2008

Campus Air Conditioning

The campus recently experienced warm days and several of the buildings became uncomfortable. Facilities Management has the goal of delaying chiller start up until at least May 1st. The campus electricity bill is based on the amount of power used and the highest kilowatt demand level (peak) reached in each calender month. If we were to enable the chillers for just one day of operation in April, the utility company would charge us the higher rate for the entire month of April. Our average annual electricity bill for the main campus is over one million dollars and the Governor has mandated all state facilities to reduce our electrical usage by 10% this year and 20% by 2010. We are diligently working to conserve energy and reduce our carbon footprint. Each additional day in May that we delay start up will help reduce our annual cost. Please report any areas where the heat may be malfunctioning, either continuously running or off. We appreciate
your help.

Chilled Water Plant Construction

Construction will begin the week of May 3 for the new chilled water plant. Most of the initial work will occur around the Heating Plant. Eventually work will progress through the eastern part of the campus mall, focused mainly between CSH and KFA. The project will take place most of the Summer. For more information on this or other Summer related projects, please check out "Projects" on the Facilities Management website.

South Wasson Lane closed

Please note that South Wasson Lane is scheduled to be closed due to a bridge construction project from May 1st through July 25th. Traffic will be rerouted at least through the end of June or early July. Residents along that road will receive notification also in the mail. (Mike Stifter)

Campus Power Outage

Please note that a Campus Power Outage is scheduled to take place on Monday, 5/19 starting at 3:30 p.m. The outage is expected to last for up to six hours. The outage is being scheduled to make some service repairs to the main campus transformer. If you were to have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact Facilities Management at x3820. (Mike Stifter)

Boiler Shutdown

For your long range planning, please note that the boilers are down in the spring for two weeks following residence hall closing. Steam that provides heating, hot water, cooking, distilling, pasteurization, drying, and sterilization will not be available beginning Saturday, May 17, after 6 p.m. The boilers will be started again on Monday, June 2, with steam service resuming that afternoon. Summer Painting Requests

Facilities Management is in the process of scheduling work for our summer paint crew. If you are aware of an office change, office being vacated, a classroom or other area that needs painting, please submit a request to greg.l.koehler@uwrf.edu as soon as possible so the area can evaluated and possibly fit into the summer paint schedule.
