1. Registration Open for UWRF Summer Youth Program
There’s still time to register for Discover U, a summer program open to all youth entering grades 4-9 in the fall of 2008. Discover U classes run July 7-11 and July 14-18 from 9 am to 12 noon.

Classes meet on the UWRF campus, Monday through Friday, and are taught by university faculty and other specially selected teachers. Costs are $125 for each one-week class.
Visit the web site at www.uwrf.edu/discoveru for course descriptions, program information, online registration and a printable catalog. Or contact the UWRF Outreach office at 715-425-3256 or send an email.

2. Rivers of Learning Workshop to explore St. Croix, Mississippi
Two of the most important waterways in the United States are the subject of a workshop for teachers, educators, environmentalists and others interested in the natural resources of the St. Croix Valley.

“Rivers of Learning: A Multi-Disciplinary Study of the St. Croix and Mississippi Rivers” will be offered for credit through the UWRF and noncredit trough the Great River Road Learning
Center in Prescott, Wis.

The workshop runs June 23-27 from 8:30 to 5 p.m. and is held at the Great River Road Learning Center, www.freedomparkwi.org. The instructor is Sandra Hudson, who is an educator at the center and former naturalist with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.

The workshop includes tours and field trips to the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway National Park Service headquarters in St. Croix Falls, a canoe trip from Taylor’s Falls, Minn., to Osceola, Wis., and other activities. Program partners and presenters include the NPS, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Minnesota Historical Society, Science Museum of Minnesota, and Paddleford Boat Packet Co.

Participants will hear from NPS Ranger Dale Cox, Artist Vera Ming Wong, Riverboat Pilot Gene Tronnier, and a character actor playing St. Paul schoolteacher “Harriet Bishop” from the
MHS.

While both are breathtakingly beautiful and some of America’s national treasures, the rivers are in jeopardy. The Mississippi, which bisects the continental United States for 1,500 miles north to south, is one of the greatest and most threatened rivers in the world. Participants will explore issues facing this national resource in hand-on experiences.

The St. Croix is one of 13 rivers designated a national wild and scenic waterway. Recently, the Lower St. Croix, a bustling recreational stretch, was classified in an environmentally endangered status by the U.S.Department of Natural Resources.

The workshop explores the meaning of these rivers through an interdisciplinary approach including history, Native American culture, literature and environmental science.
Participants can take the class through UWRF for two undergraduate or graduate credits and pay fees accordingly.

To register for credit, contact the UWRF Outreach and Graduate Studies Office at 715-425-3256 and request to register for course TED 495/695 Section 2. The cost for the noncredit option is $175 and registration is made through the Great River Road Leaning Center at 715-262-0104.

3. UWRF Tuesday Concert Series Heats Up Summer
The annual Tuesday-evening UWRF free summer concert series begins June 10 and runs through July 22 at 7 p.m. in the Melvin Wall Amphitheatre on campus.

Grilled brats, hamburgers, soda, and ice cream will be available for purchase on the concert site. Rain site for the concerts is the UWRF University Center Falcon’s Nest.

The first event is a performance by the Chris Silver Band on June 10. The band blends bluegrass, funk and jam to create an original acoustic sound.

June 17 is the Tropical Breeze band, which plays Caribbean-style music that will take listeners on a virtual trip to the island tropics with musical influences from Jamaica, Trinidad, Virgin Islands, and the Bahamas.

The Roster McCabe band plays June 24, with an impressive show of vocals, world beats and harmonies.

On July 1 Wisconsin’s musical ambassador show choir, The Kids From Wisconsin, returns to River Falls. The choir is made up of musically talented youth—singers, musicians and dancers—from the Badger state.

The Tommy Bentz band performs July 8, putting on a rock-and-roll showcase of great musicianship and songwriting.

The combo Sepia Tone on July 15 offers a palette of sonic color and musical experiences by blending styles of classical, jazz, modern, folk, country, funk and blues music.

On July 22, the band, Trampled By Turtles, from Duluth, Minn., will perform its unique brand of fast, stomping bluegrass that will bring audience members to their feet.

For more information about the UWRF Summer Concert Series, contact the University Center at 715-425-4444.

4. Funding Received for New Asian Studies Program at UWRF

UWRF recently received a grant to begin an Asian Studies Program. The program will enrich and enhance existing international education programs by incorporating the study of Asia into the university curriculum.

The grant was awarded by the U.S. Department of Education Undergraduate International Studies and Foreign Language Program and totals $89,982 for each of two years.

Dean Terry Brown of the College of Arts and Sciences says the the program will allow the university to expand and internationalize course offerings. "It will have a significant impact on our university's strategic goal to promote global literacy by internationalizing the curriculum."

The program will include an Asian Studies minor that consists of 27 credits, including two years of Chinese or Japanese, core and distribution courses, a research project, study in Asia, and a senior capstone seminar.

The program will allow students to experience expanded Chinese and Japanese language instruction and also new and enhanced courses in Asian history, politics, arts, geography and philosophy.

There also will be faculty development opportunities to enable current instructors to infuse Asian Studies topics into new or existing courses. Research and scholarship opportunities will also be available with an increase in extra-curricular activities focusing on Asian topics or issues such as performances, speakers, festivals and colloquia.
