1. UWRF joins with regional campuses on educational agreement
Four leaders in higher education in the Chippewa and St. Croix valleys signed a major agreement May 3 pledging to work together to improve Wisconsin’s economy.
Chancellors Don Betz of UW-River Falls, Charles W. Sorensen of UW-Stout, Brian Levin-Stankevich of UW-Eau Claire and President William Ihlenfeldt of Chippewa Valley Technical College signed an Educational Partnership for Regional Development.

The keynote speaker at the signing was Secretary Mary P. Burke of the state Department of Commerce.

The agreement calls for the four institutions to work together “to create a new model in educational partnership.”

That partnership, the agreement says, will:

  • Develop curricula to meet the education and training needs of the workforce in the St. Croix and Chippewa valleys.
  • Pursue enhanced credit transfer opportunities among the four institutions.
  • Refine other partnerships and procedures to advance workforce development.

“Those of us in the St. Croix and Chippewa valleys have known for quite some time that we are committed in our collaboration to develop the ‘IQ Corridor’ that spans I-94,” Betz said. “By formalizing this relationship, we are sending a powerful message in a united voice to businesses and government leaders that they can rely on us to meet the economic development needs of our region through the production of graduates, research expertise, and opportunities for continuing education.”

Earlier this year, all four institutions joined together for the first Integrated Solutions Consortium Symposium, which brought together faculty, staff and students from the schools and other organizations or individuals conducting research. The symposium gave participants from all four institutions an opportunity to learn what other researchers are doing and to foster collaboration to share resources and expertise.

8. UWRF career services director lectures in Sweden
UWRF Director of Career Services Carmen Croonquist served as the keynote speaker and led a workshop for the Nordic Network Conference, a professional association that unites university career centers in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, and Iceland.

A certified branding strategist, Croonquist introduced the concept of using career portfolios for personal branding during a workshop she offered in addition to her address.

The conference held May 23-27 in Goteborg, Sweden, also featured speakers from the U.K., and from local business and industry corporations that hire university graduates. In addition, the conference offered workshops to help the university career centers learn how to promote their services to students, faculty, administrators, and employers, networking, and helped each country focus on the particular strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats being faced by their respective offices.

Croonquist has long been recognized as an expert advocating the use of career portfolios in career planning, job interviewing, and performance evaluations. She was referenced by Richard Bolles in the 2007 edition of “What Color is Your Parachute?” as a thought leader in the arena of developing and utilizing portfolios for career enhancement.

Career portfolios have been a part of the curriculum in most of UWRF’s academic departments since 1995, a self-marketing tool that Croonquist credits to many UWRF students receiving more job offers at higher starting salaries. She has spoken all over the country on this topic, and spent five days in Iceland in 2005 lecturing on the topic.

For Croonquist, attending the Nordic Network Conference at Goteborg University was as much about learning as it was about sharing her ideas. Most career centers are a very new service offered by Nordic Counties universities in the past five years.
