1. Community Classroom Topics: Pluto……and Ancient Egypt
In 2006, astronomers made the decision that Pluto was no longer officially defined as a planet. What counts as a planet in our solar system? How is that status determined, and why would it change? Dr. Eileen Korenic, UWRF physics department, presents “The "Dogged" Debate over What Happened to Pluto” on Tuesday, Feb. 27.
Across the country, community and school groups, and even professional science societies responded to the 2006 Pluto decision with varied emotions, ranging from deep disappointment (poor Pluto) to scientific satisfaction (at last, a reasonable criterion). Through the case of Pluto, learn how science reinvents itself as new discoveries are made.
Tuesday, March 6, Dr. Steven Derfler, UWRF art department, will present “New Discoveries in the Valley of Kings.”
Incredible archaeological discoveries have been made in Egypt over the past several decades. But not since the 1922 excavation of the tomb of the boy-king, Tutankhamun, have further intact tombs been identified, let alone cleared - until now. Experience the UWRF J-term Journey to Egypt program's visit to the Valley of Kings, as they see the recent excavation in progress - and learn about the discovery of a new, unopened tomb, KV 63. Its construction, grave goods and ritual objects have re-ignited the world's passion for all things Ancient Egyptian.
Outreach and Graduate Studies and the College of Arts and Sciences offer the Community Classroom series each fall and spring. University faculty share their expertise through informal presentations on a variety of topics.
All lectures are free, begin at 7 p.m. and are held at the River Falls Public Library, lower level, on the corner of Main and Union streets. A list of scheduled sessions is on the web at www.uwrf.edu/ogs or contact the Outreach office at outreach@uwrf.edu.
2. We would really like to hear from you….
Be on the look-out for an email with the subject line: “West-Central Wisconsin Regional Business Survey.”
The West-Central Regional Education Consortium, http://wcw-pk16.org/, is conducting a survey of regional businesses as part of our Synergy in Action initiative. By completing the survey, you will assist us in our efforts to better reach and serve businesses in the nine-county Synergy region that spans the I-94 corridor from Hudson through Clark County.
3. Spanish, Italian classes offered for adults
There is still space to take “Beginning Italian” and “Spanish II” classes offered by the UW-River Falls Outreach office.
The classes are held on six consecutive evenings beginning Feb. 7 for Italian and March 27 for Spanish. All courses are designed to give adults the skills to successfully communicate and enjoy travel whether for business or pleasure. All classes will take place on the UWRF campus with free parking.
For more information on the classes or to request registration forms, contact Cynthia Wells-O’Malley at 715/425-3261 or by email to: cynthia.wells-omalley@uwrf.edu.
4. Financial Planning Courses to be on tap
Planning for the first of five classes that comprise the UWRF’s Financial Planning Certificate is underway.
“Financial Planning Process and Insurance” covers the legal, ethical, and regulatory issues affecting financial planning and the time-value of money concepts that are the basis for successful financial planning. Insurance principals and risk management that help in identifying a client's needs are also discussed.
Classes are held in the evenings to accommodate working professionals. Contact the Outreach office at outreach@uwrf.edu to learn when dates are set.
