2. This Beer Tastes Really Good: Nationalism, Consumerism and Development of the Beer Industry in North China
The beer brewery industry in Qingdao, North China, began in 1903 as a German business and grew under Japanese management between 1914 and 1945. After 1949, however, the production of Qingdao (Tsingtao) Beer came under the control of Chinese Communist government that has utilized nationalism and consumerism to stimulate the development of beer industry and to increase the sale of Qingdao Beer both in Chinese and overseas markets.

Learn about how the history of Qingdao beer exemplifies the century-long Chinese struggle for economic and political independence and modernization, and how the beer industry connected China with the rest of the world during the Cold War and made China part of the global community in the post-Cold War era.

This topic will be presented by Zhiguo Yang, UW-River Falls history and philosophy department on March 30 as part of the Community Classroom series sponsored by the College of Arts and Sciences Outreach and the Outreach office of UW-River Falls.

All events are open to the public and are held from 7 – 8:30 p.m. in the lower level of the River Falls Public Library on Division and Union Streets in River Falls. No reservations are required to attend.

3. Community Classroom Explores Single Sex Classrooms
A bill recently introduced in the Wisconsin Legislature would permit public schools to enroll only one gender or to create single-sex classrooms.

University of Wisconsin-River Falls physics Professor Rellen Hardtke will present "Can Single Sex Classrooms Help? Closing the Gender Gap in Math and Science" as part of the Community Classroom Series on Thursday, March 9, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the lower level of the River Falls Public Library.

Some critics argue that boys and girls need to learn together in order to later work effectively with both genders in the workplace. Others say that studies at this time are too limited to undertake such dramatic changes in education. The presentation is designed for parents and educators, as well as business professionals, to learn about the proposed legislation and its implications to education and the future workplace.

Community Classroom events are sponsored by the UW-RF College of Arts and Sciences and the outreach office. All events are free, open to the public and are held from 7-8:30 p.m. at the River Falls Public Library on Division and Union streets in River Falls. No reservations are required to attend.

Information is available at www.uwrf.edu/outreach or may be obtained by calling the UW-RF outreach office at 715-425-3256, 1-800-228-5607 or by e-mailing outreach@uwrf.edu.
