1. First Annual Kinnickinnic Nature Festival June 2-3
The first annual “KinniFest: A Celebration of Our River,” June 2-3, aims to create a better understanding of the Kinnickinnic River, a nationally renowned Class I trout stream in Pierce County, Wis., known regionally for its beauty and outstanding water quality.

Free and open to the public, KinniFest offers opportunities to learn about the “Kinni” and the resources it provides for the community. The festival will also feature nature art displays from local artists and a historical presentation of River Falls.

As a sponsor of the event, UW-River Falls will have a tent and exhibits for the public as well.
The event runs Friday, June 2 from 6 to 9 p.m., and begins with music in Veterans Park in downtown River Falls and the dedication of Riverwalk. On Saturday, June 3, the celebration continues from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. with nature field trips, demonstrations and exhibits by local businesses, organizations and schools. Exhibits open at 10 a.m.

Saturday’s events include eight guided field trips departing from Glen Park at various times throughout the day, starting with “Birdwatching” from 7-10 a.m. led by Mike Middleton, UW-RF professor of plant and earth science, and birder Larry Persico. Other field trips include the “Geology of Glen Park” led by William Cordua, UW-RF professor of plant and earth science, and “Fish of the Kinni” led by Marty Engel, fisheries biologist for the Wisconsin DNR.

Children can read a compass, examine mammal bones and pelts, preserve a flower and taste wild food plants at the Children’s Discovery Realm, featuring eight fun and educational stations.
The day’s events also include a Harris Hawk demonstration by Nell Henry, a long-time volunteer at the Raptor Center at the University of Minnesota, as well as rock and fossil identification by Cordua and a Trout Unlimited Fly Fishing Seminar.

All are welcome to attend KinniFest to help celebrate, protect and enhance the Kinnickinnic River. For more information please contact festival coordinator Joyce Mattson by sending an email to jycmttsn@yahoo.com.

2. Business Feasibility Workshop Offered in Polk County
Find out if your business idea is feasible at a new workshop, Business Feasibility Analysis, offered by the UW-RF Small Business Development Center and UW Extension.

"It's your chance to 'kick the tires,' so to speak, on business plan development to satisfy your entrepreneurial urge," says Steve DeWald director of the UW-RF SBDC. The workshop is also geared toward small business owners who are thinking of a business expansion.

The workshop, presented by e DeWald, is a one-evening session on July 13 at 6 p.m. in the Polk County Government Center in Balsam Lake.

The fee is $20, and participants receive a manual and handouts to keep.

The workshop will address questions such as: Will your business idea work? Is it a good investment for your life savings? Should you take the next step? Do you want to participate in the American dream of owning a small business?

Seating is limited so participants are urged to register in advance. To register call DeWald or Tina Kelly at 715/425-0620.

3. Summer Advertising/Public Relations Course Available
A course that will provide hands-on experience in several marketing communications tactics will be offered this summer through UW-RF.

“Marketing Communications 389: Implementation Strategies” will afford those working in or aspiring to work in the fields of public relations or advertising with the background and knowledge in key skills such as conducting research, event planning, media buying and proposal writing.

Designed as a capstone course for students in the university’s marketing communications major, the course is open to general public participants who have some background in the field. The course meets Monday through Friday, from 1:15 to 4:30 p.m., July 5-21 in Room 320, North Hall.

Tuition and fees are $650 for Wisconsin residents and $710 for Minnesota residents. If not enrolled at UW-RF, participants can apply free for admission as a “temporary undergraduate” by completing a short online form at www.uwrf.edu/summer. The UW-RF admissions office will then follow up with information on registering and paying for the class.

The class will be taught by Tracy O’Connell, assistant professor in the marketing communications program.

Prior to joining UW-RF in 2004, she managed for-profit and not-for-profit advertising, public relations and marketing communications in Wisconsin and California for nearly 30 years.

For more information, contact the instructor at tracy.oconnell@uwrf.edu or 715-425-3169.

4. Youth Programs Begin on Campus in June and July
Beginning June 19, teens who have finished grades 6, 7 or 8 will have an opportunity to get a taste of the college campus environment. Another program for students who’ve finished grades 3, 4 and 5 begins July 17.

Each year, hundreds of youths attend Teen University or College for Kids, two summer outreach programs offered by the university. Both programs provide academic enrichment classes for students who show high academic potential, motivation and talent.

Students can choose from a number of classes taught by University faculty and other highly qualified instructors. The classes are designed to stimulate creative and critical thinking in a variety of artistic and academic disciplines, and to provide individual and social enrichment through a university campus-based experience.

To participate, students must be nominated by their school counselor or teacher. Visit the web site for more information or contact the Outreach office by email at outreach@uwrf.edu.

5. St. Croix River Institute Features Geology, Ecology Programs
There is still time to have fun, get outdoors, and experience the St. Croix Riverway and the Kinnickinnic Watershed this summer by enrolling in a course at UW-River Falls.

The St. Croix River Institute is a collaborative effort between UW-River Falls and the National Park Service’s St. Croix National Scenic Riverway. Courses offered by the St. Croix River Institute will benefit science teachers, educators, landowners interested in natural processes and local waterways, and anyone who is curious about the physical history and health of the St. Croix Valley.

There are two courses offered by the university under this program this summer:
