The Kansas City Chiefs will bring professional football to the St. Croix Valley when the team returns for its 16th camp on July 27.
The team will conduct practices from July 28-Aug. 18, with two practices on most day from about 9-10:45 a.m., and again from 3:45-5:15 p.m., at the Ramer Field Sports Complex. All practices, except the Aug. 5 Family Fun Night, are free and open to the public.
Several special events are scheduled during camp to give fans an extra value to their training camp experiences at UW-RF.
The popular Punt, Pass & Kick competition for boys and girls age 8-13 will be on Saturday, July 29. Registration is free, and on site will start at 11 a.m. with competition starting at noon. The event is sponsored by FedEx Ground and FedEx Home Delivery. Everyone who participates receives a ribbon and the top three place winners in each category receives a trophy. Head Coach Herman Edwards will present the trophies to the winners after the Family Fun Night practice on Aug. 5. To register on-line go to: www.uwrf.edu/chiefs/ppkform.htm.
On Aug. 4 the Chiefs will travel to Mankato, Minn., to practice with the Minnesota Vikings. Tentative practice time is from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at MSU-Mankato, the site of the Vikings Summer Training Camp.
Family Fun Night, sponsored by Viking Coca Cola of River Falls, will be held on Aug. 5. The Chiefs practice under the lights, and food, music and games will be available, as well as photo and autograph opportunities with players and coaches. The session will last from 6:30-6:50 p.m. The popular Chiefs Experience will be back. Join in some interactive games that will challenge everyone's football skills. A speed and obstacle course, a football throw and a field goal kicking station will be part of the fun. The Experience is open to everyone. The Indianhead Sport Parachute Club kicks off the festivities with skydiving, and a fireworks display caps off the fun. Admission is $6 for adults and free to those under 18.
Kids Days and Seniors Day at this year's camp offer fun for all ages. Kids Days are scheduled for Aug. 1 and 14 and Seniors Day will be Aug. 8. The events will be held during morning practices. 3. Seven universities, three Asian nations in 10 days
Chancellor Don Betz led a UW-River Falls delegation in late May on a multi-country visit to foster new exchange programs and reaffirm existing ones with Pacific Rim educational institutions.
The delegation met with educators, school administrators, business leaders, government officials and others in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Japan.
The delegation included Betz, Barb Nemecek, dean of the UW-RF College of Business and Economics; Bob Baker, associate dean of the UW-RF College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences; Brent Greene, director of UW-RF's international education programs; and Terry Brown, dean of the UW-RF College of Arts and Sciences.
"Our objectives were fully realized and even surpassed," said Betz. "The delegation set out to strengthen the relationships that UW-RF has with numerous Asian education institutions and to develop greater student and faculty exchange and research opportunities between these intuitions and UW-RF. We returned with specific collaboration agreements as well as a wealth of opportunities to be developed in the immediate future."
Academic institutions that the group visited included the University of Hong Kong and Nagasaki University in Japan as well as Shih Hsin University and Shih Chien University in Taiwan, and Zhejiang Education Institute in Hangzhou, China, with which the UW-RF has existing exchange agreements among others. UW-RF also has partnerships with Siebold University, Fukouka Jo Gakuin University and the Guy Healy Agency, all in Japan.
4. Business Feasibility Workshop Offered in Polk County
Find out if your business idea is feasible at a new workshop, Business Feasibility Analysis, offered by the UW-RF Small Business Development Center and UW Extension.
"It's your chance to 'kick the tires,' so to speak, on business plan development to satisfy your entrepreneurial urge," says Steve DeWald director of the UW-RF SBDC. The workshop is also geared toward small business owners who are thinking of a business expansion.
The workshop, presented by DeWald, is a one-evening session on July 13 at 6 p.m. in the Polk County Government Center in Balsam Lake.
The fee is $20, and participants receive a manual and handouts to keep.
The workshop will address questions such as: Will your business idea work? Is it a good investment for your life savings? Should you take the next step? Do you want to participate in the American dream of owning a small business?
Seating is limited so participants are urged to register in advance. To register call DeWald or Tina Kelly at 715/425-0620.
5. Summer Advertising/Public Relations Course Available
A course that will provide hands-on experience in several marketing communications tactics will be offered this summer through UW-RF.
“Marketing Communications 389: Implementation Strategies” will afford those working in or aspiring to work in the fields of public relations or advertising with the background and knowledge in key skills such as conducting research, event planning, media buying and proposal writing.
Designed as a capstone course for students in the university’s marketing communications major, the course is open to general public participants who have some background in the field. The course meets weekdays, from 1:15 to 4:30 p.m., July 5-21 in Room 320, North Hall.
Tuition and fees are $650 for Wisconsin residents and $710 for Minnesota residents with reciprocity. If not enrolled at UW-RF, participants can apply for admission as a “temporary undergraduate” by completing a short form online at www.uwrf.edu/summer. The UW-RF admissions office will then follow up with information on registering and paying for the class.
The class will be taught by Tracy O’Connell, assistant professor in the marketing communications program. Prior to joining UW-RF in 2004, she managed for-profit and not-for-profit advertising, public relations and marketing communications in Wisconsin and California for nearly 30 years.
For more information, contact the instructor at tracy.oconnell@uwrf.edu or 715-425-3169.
