INSTRUCTIONS FOR USING MAPTECH TERRAIN NAVIGATOR
1. Obtain the Maptech CD-ROM from your instructor, and use the Gateway computer in rm. 410 across from Bergland's office.
2. Use the Start button to access Programs, and select Maptech Terrain Navigator from the list
3. There are a number of ways of finding locations; e.g., you can click on a location on the Wisconsin map, or else use the GoTo menu as shown below:
4. Once you have located the area of interest, it is best to use the "24" and "1:1" scale buttons as shown below:
5. To calculate distance and area, you can use one of the distance tool buttons shown on the graphic above (straight line tool on left, irregular line tool on right). To calculate enclosed area, you drag the mouse with the left mouse button to trace the area of interest (make sure to end exactly where you started!), then hold down the right mouse button on top of the blue line that you traced, and select "information" as shown below:
An information box will pop up with distance and area data, if applicable, as shown below:
To clear the blue lines you have traced, hold the right mouse button down with the cursor on top of the line to be cleared, and select "clear" from the pop-up menu:
6. To save a section of a map, select the "export" menu item from the "file" menu as shown below:
Be sure to save the map in "Windows Bitmapped Format":
7. Double-clicking on the bitmapped image will open it in the Paint program of Windows 95. You can modify the image as necessary, then save it again. To be visible on the Web, the image cannot be in bitmapped format but must be in either .jpg, .gif or .png format. If using the PC computer in rm 410, use Adobe Photoshop to make this conversion. If using one of the computers in the library, use Microsoft Photo Editor to make the conversion.
