TIMED SPECIES ACCOUNT FOR THE CRESTED WOOD PARTRIDGE (DAY 2)

MAY 7:  MINNESOTA ZOO, APPLE VALLEY, MINNESOTA

1:11 - A chick ate from the beak of the male (unusual on this day)

1:15 - Family ate from feeders for about 2 minutes

1:19 - More shuffling through dirt and leaves, searching for food

1:20 - Whole family grooms themselves

1:25 - One chick tucks its head under its wing and sleeps

1:26 - Same chick up and running around again

1:27 - A chick attempts to crawl under female.  Female walked away.  Chick kept trying; female fluttered a foot away and crouched down with head tucked.  Baby gave up and laid down by himself

1:30 - Everybody napping except male - still on his feet, picking at rotten bark

1:45 - Everyone up and ground feeding

1:55 - Male nibbling out of feeder

1:56 - Female joins male and eats at feeder

1:57 - All 5 scratching and feeding from ground

2:10 - Again, feeding at feeder

2:11 - Off the feeder and feeding from ground

2:15 - Everyone resting

2:17 - Chick tries to crawl under female twice - again, denied both times

2:19 - Nap time over - up and moving again.  When running after male, a chick spoke a vocalization; "dike dike dike," very fast and repeatedly

2:21 - One chicks and parents ran off - left 2 chicks behind.  Neither parents or chicks were worried about being apart (beginnings of independence)

2:24 - Female fed two chicks

2:34 - Female, male, and one chick back at feeder

2:44 - I spotted the two independent chicks up in the branches of a 3 foot high tree(I'd lost track of them for about 10 minutes).  They appeared to be just resting there, out of harm's way

2:46 - One chick comes out of tree and flies from a standstill to parents.  A Red-billed Leiothrix lands on branch near it and chick becomes startled and flaps its wings

2:48 - Two chicks and parents fly over to near feeder

2:50 - Last chick comes out of tree

2:52 - Family eating at feeder

2:53 - Out of feeder
