Muslim
Wise Man. Taken during a 1984 National
Geographic Society Expedition. This
Hui Muslim man of northwest China
was sporting traditional quartz glasses
in a park of Lanzhou.

Wild
Asses in Wilderness. At an elevation
of over 4,500 meters in the wilderness
of western Tibet, Tibetan Wild Asses
display their ability to sprint up
to 50 km/hr, an impressive speed
in such rarefied air.

Path
to Enlightenment. Hua Shan is one
of the five most celebrated mountains
of China. Situated in Shenxi Province,
it boasts some of the most difficult
and precipitous trails leading to
several Taoist temples in the mountain.

Rice
Fields. Taken during a 1983 National
Geographic Society Expedition. Zhaoxing
Village in southern Guizhou is a
settlement of the Dong ethnic group.
In Dong villages, each clan builds
a high drum tower which is their
point of focus and symbolizes unity.
