Sibling
Love. Taken while leading a 1983
National Geographic Society Expedition.
The Oroqen is an ethnic group of
northeast China. As nomadic hunters,
men as well as young boys wear hats
made from year-old deer. This helps
camouflage the hunters when they
go on hunting trips.

Wind,
Rain and a Good Harvest. Taken during
a National Geographic Society Expedition,
this photo has graced the pages of
the magazine. The Dragon Boat Festival
of the Miao people in southeastern
Guizhou Province is to induce optimum
wind and rain in anticipation of
a good harvest. Men wearing horse-hair
broad hats stand ceremoniously while
paddling with oars. A boy impersonating
a young girl with silver headdress,
neck adornment and costume hits a
gong to regiment uniformity. Fireworks
are periodically set off by a man
at the bow of the boat.

Rare Black-necked Cranes of the Tibetan
plateau take flight.

Spring
Snow. Snow flakes drift about village
houses near Lijiang of northwestern
Yunnan. The area is home to many
national minorities including the
Bai, Naxi, Yi and Lisu.
