Wind
Horse. Tibetans are Buddhist, but
also practice many forms of nature
worship. In Marqu county of Southern
Gansu, men gather once a year to
make offerings of paper "Longda"
(wind horse) to deities inhabiting
neighborhood sacred mountains.

Auspicious

Karmapa on September 27, 1992, at Tsurphu
Monastery in Tibet. Eight-year-old
Ugyen Drodu Trinley Dorje became the

the reincarnation system of Tibet.

Netting
a Good Harvest. Taken while leading
a 1985 National Geographic Society
Expedition. Fishermen work over their
nets for an early catch, silhouetted
against Lake Honghu in Hubei Province.
Draining into the Yangtze, Honghu helps
regulate water of the Yangtze during
flooding season. |
