o        Use this guide sheet for advice:  the courses you must take, and the admission to Teacher education process you must complete, student teaching to do to graduate and become certified with a K-12 Art teaching license.   

o        Honors students should try to take “Honors” sections of required courses.

o        You do not need a minor with this program. If you have a minor or another major you are pursuing check the catalogue for what courses to take.

 

I.                   Advice for General Education Courses:

Follow the General Education Requirements of the College of Education  (page 47 in 01-03 Catalogue).

·        Prioritize taking SCTA 101, ENG 111 & 112, because you need those to apply to Teacher Education and need at least a

 

II.      Advice on registering for ART courses:

Take Art Courses in Broad Area Art-Education (page 67).

 

1.      Art 253: Art in the Schools is only taught in FALL SEMESTER.

·        Do NOT register for Art 253 until you have completed courses TED 120 and preferably TED 211 or 212. (i.e. NO FRESHMAN!)

2.      Take at least 2 art courses every semester.

·        Ask instructors to keep you on a waiting list if you anticipate the course may close before you register. Go and try to get an add card from the instructor if you don’t get in at first.  Keep checking Master Schedule until start of semester for possible drops. Go on first day and try to add.

3.      You DO NOT NEED Art 100-Introduction to Art or ART 250-Child Art- will be an extra courses counted as electives and info is repeated in requirements Art 211, 212 and Art 253.

4.      All 200 level art courses count in their Art 200 category.

5.      All 300 & 400 level art courses count in their Art 300-400 category.

6.      Take some studios at alternative times like J-TERM and Pigeon Lake or campus summer session to help complete art courses.

7.      BUY YOUR ART TEXTBOOKS when possible and save handouts/course notes in a file. You will have to pass a Praxis 2 Test on Art Content as part of certification requirements starting in 2004. You will want to review content you have covered in studio and art history before the test.

 

III.       Advice on registering for Education courses:

  • Take Professional Coursework in Secondary Education in the College of Education (page 161)
  • It is important to keep on track and start education courses as early as possible.

 

1.  As soon as you have 12 credits with a 2.50 or better GPA try to register for TED120:

a.   Combined grade point average of a 2.5 in all courses including transfer courses and completed or in progress 12 credits.

b.   Pick up an add card from Michael Martin, Rm. 203 WEB, on the day of your scheduled registration. (You will need to bring a current copy of your DAR to pick up the add card.)

c.   Must receive a grade of “C” or better in Ted 120 for admission to Teacher Education.

2.  You can register for TED 211 or 212 simultaneously with TED 120 or after you’ve taken Ted 120:

1.      Have completed or in progress TED 120 with a grade of C or better.

2.      Have a combined GPA of 2.75 including transfer classes.

3.      Pick up an add card from the TED office, 257 WEB on your registration day. (You will need to bring a current copy of your DAR to pick up the add card.)

4.      It requires 25 hours in the schools- plan a time block in your schedule.

 

3. You can take TED 253: Multicultural Education any time.  Plan on 20 hours in the schools so leave a time block.

4. TED 430: Techniques in Art is only taught SPRING SEMESTERS and you need it to Student Teach-PLAN AHEAD!

 

IV.  Advice for Admission to Teacher Education 

(Needed before 400-level TED courses can be taken-registration block)

 

1.      Check the Teacher Education Department Website for the Guidelines and Forms for Admission to Teacher Education: http://www.uwrf.edu/college-of -education/TED/admission.htm

    • (You are considered a ‘Secondary Education Student-Undergraduate”)
  • Take the Praxis I: PPST Tests AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!

·         The sooner you take them after HS graduation the better scores you will have!!!

·         Pick up an application pamphlet from the WEB Dean’s office, Hawthorne or call for an appointment at Sylvan Learning Centers.

2. Keep up your grades- you need a 2.75 cum GPA to be admitted.

3. Complete other forms as soon as you can and get everything into you folder for review.

5.      Register for them to review your folder for Admission to Teacher Education as soon as your documents are complete-they do reviews about Oct. 1 and Feb 15. You register on the website.

 

 

V.   Advice for Application for Student Teaching:

 

1.      Go to an informational meeting one year before you are planning to student teach- you will find meeting times on the website and posted in WEB by the Dean’s Office. Application happens in November or March one year in advance of student teaching.

2.      Follow application procedures and get the forms on the website.

3.      You will be able to choose two geographical areas, which will guide your placement.

4.      Art Education students teach 9 weeks at elementary or middle school and 9 weeks at high school.
