Artist Statement

My need to create art is as essential to me as breathing. I find inspiration simply by looking at the people in the world around me. I am especially interested in the different emotions people express. I work in the printmaking process of stone lithography. Working in this media compliments my drawing style well and it's a process that i enjoy working in. I love the fact that i can draw on a piece of stone and call it art.

I enjoy using people as my subjects because no matter how many times i draw the same person they can become a completely different composition with the slightest change of movement. The prints that I make are a more personal extension of the original photo I've taken which I use as my model; for me, the skill that is involved in the process of drawing on the stone and making a print is why I do not solely take photos. I love the challenge of trying to make the drawings appear as photographs because they draw the viewer in ; the texture of the paper, the shading quality and richness of the ink are all elements I use to achieve this effect.

I am currently shifting my focus from the face into other areas of the figure, particularly the hands. Hands are one of the most difficult parts of the body to draw and that is why I like to draw them; I love the challenge. When i am displaying the hand alone and upright, i want to force the viewer to focus solely on that specific body part. Hands say so much about a person and with the slightest change in movement, they can show a completely different personality or emotion. the hand ultimately is as much of a portrait as the face.
