The university is committed to maintaining an atmosphere and reputation for inclusion and diversity. From the colorful, public cultural celebrations to the statistical surveys, UWRF strives to ensure that we not only “advertise” diversity, but that we provide a comfortable and encouraging climate for all of our students. That’s the idea behind the MAP IT survey, The Multicultural Awareness Project for Institutional Transformation. This survey of students, faculty and staff seeks to evaluate every aspect of life on campus as it relates to fostering a welcoming, inclusive atmosphere. Our Unity in the Community celebration has expanded from its original campus location to include a performance spot in Veteran’s Park in downtown River Falls. The city itself has two entry points at which visitors are welcomed to a city and university that are truly inclusive. The university is pursuing grant money for an expansion of its pre-college scholarship program. Our goal is to bring this popular program to junior high and senior high students of color in the Twin Cities, who are eligible for scholarships made available by the Department of Public Instruction. The junior high and senior high students who do enroll in our program are primarily from the Milwaukee area, and ultimately choose universities and colleges closer to home. Expanding our scholarship availability to Twin Cities youth will greatly improve our likelihood of attracting students of color to UW-River Falls and enhancing our university with a more diverse population. In 2006 the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences at the university was awarded a U.S. Department of Agriculture Multicultural Scholars grant that provides five full scholarships for incoming freshmen. Five students will receive a $6,000 scholarship for each year they are on campus, up to four years. Of the $6,000, $4,500 comes from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and UWRF provides the remaining $1,500. . |
