Creating a Culture of Learning

UWRF Students distribute school supplies at Cristo Rey School in western Belize

“I think the whole idea of helping kids who need it is a great way for college students to learn and get some much needed experience.”

- Katie Zappa, UWRF Education Major

Above all, we’re committed to creating an environment where the spirit of learning thrives, with student and teacher alike engaged in the fine art of constant discovery.

For our undergraduates, this means providing more than the traditional teaching methods. We encourage the RSCA format -- Research, Scholarly and Creative Activity – which brings students into the scholarly work of professors, who in turn guide the students in finding practical applications in their fields of study. This program has seen our undergraduates thrive in such settings as the National Conference on Undergraduate Research. On campus, the student-led Society for Undergraduate Research, Scholarly and Creative Activity is embarking on another active year, seeking out more opportunities to grow.

We further foster this culture through our Honors programs, in which select students who maintain at least a 3.3 grade point average are given access to advanced learning activities such as honors seminars, designated honors classes, events, service-learning opportunities and a senior project.

The university recently added a first-year experience program, which in addition to helping new students transition to the college also helps flag those who are struggling.

We also give students opportunities to learn where they live through Residence Hall Learning Communities, where students may choose to live in clusters with colleagues who share similar academic pursuits
