In the fall of 2006 UW-River Falls posted the largest enrollment in its history. This was accompanied by a record incoming freshman class. The College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences added a new veterinary technology program to its roster of majors and a new sustainable agriculture option within the crop and soils major. With construction beginning in 2006, the new $9.3 million Dairy Learning Center opened in October, 2007. (UW-River Falls is one of the three largest dairy science undergraduate programs in the country.) To expand online learning, a $2.5 million Title III grant was awarded to UW-River Falls and Chippewa Valley Technical College. A week-long series of events took place in January, 2007, to celebrate the opening of the new $34 million University Center, an environmentally sound, technologically-friendly and architectural jewel on campus, certain to foster a new era in university relations – with students, faculty and with the greater River Falls community. In April, 2007, UWRF hosted the first-ever American Democracy Project North Central Regional Conference. This conference focused on the intersection of sustainability and civic engagement and drew about 100 participants from seven states. The university along with community-owned River Falls Municipal Utilities and power supplier Wisconsin Public Power Inc. signed an agreement to develop mutually beneficial renewable energy and energy conservation programs, projects and educational activities. In June, 2007, the university received a $460,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The grant allows the university to establish a sustainable agriculture major within the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences. The St. Croix Institute for Sustainable Community Development was created in April, 2007, at UW-River Falls and received a $50,000 grant from the McKnight Foundation. The Institute brings the university together with communities in the St. Croix valley in the goal of addressing local, regional and global sustainability issues. UW-River Falls was honored twice by national media. It was noted as one of the top public master's degree-granting universities in the Midwest by U.S. News & World Report. And it was among the “Best Midwestern Colleges” listed in The Princeton Review. The UW-River Falls College of Business and Economics achieved accreditation by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) Student Achievements and Honors In May, 2007, Jill Crandall, a senior from Roseville, was named Women's National Field Athlete of the Year by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Amy Robak, a freshman from Foley, Minnesota was the national winner in the area of Environmental Science and Natural Resource Entrepreneurship-Placement at the national convention of the Future Farmers of America in Oct., 2006. Two senior geography students, Amy Fox, from Cannon Falls, Minnesota and Peter Tufigno, from Wyoming, Minnesota won the top two student prizes, respectively, at the 2006 Association of American Geographers Joint Annual Meeting of the Great Plains-Rocky Mountain Division and the West Lakes Division. Faculty, Staff and alumni Achievements and Honors Larry Baumann, a professor in the Department of Animal and Food Science, was recently presented with the Veterinarian of the Year Award from the Wisconsin Veterinary Medical Association. A computer program that calculates how much pasture forage dairy cows consume each day was introduced by Dennis Cooper, a professor in the Animal and Food Science Department, and Dennis Cosgrove, a professor in the Plant and Earth Science Department. Public Affairs Director, Mark Kinders, was elected chair of a national higher education committee of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities. Barbara Nemecek, dean of the College of Business and Economics, was elected to the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) International Board of Directors. Terry Jorgenson, a recent graduate, won the Outstanding Student Teacher Award from the Wisconsin Council of Teachers of English Language Arts.
