- Attendees, in order around the room, spoke about their current international activities and interests. These range from curricular, research, study abroad, consulting, travel, and a variety of other activities. As usual, our members are conducting an amazing amount and diversity of international activities.
- A discussion ensued about the mission, core values, and tasks of the Association. Our current mission statement and core values are quite accurately described in our printed literature. It was suggested that we be more specific about listing our actual tasks, including the activities we will engage in this year.
- There was a general consensus that we need to become more visible on campus. This can take place through our various tasks, as well as by attaching our Association’s name to all activities of our members over the next year.
- There was also a general consensus that we do need funding for a quarter-time release from classes each semester for the Director of the Association. Many tasks can be delegated, but we still need a point person with adequate budget (time) for overall direction and organization.
- There was agreement about undertaking the following tasks:
- Jackie Brux will again request a budget from the university to fund a one-quarter release time from teaching per semester for the Director of the Association.
- Brent Green will establish a Foundation account for the Association for various expenses of the Association.
- Nancy Parlin will contact with the Foundation about establishing opportunities for donations to the Association’s Foundation account.
- Jose Vega suggested that Association members make a donation to the account to assist the Director with financial needs.
- Jackie will work with Bill Campbell to write a “grant” grant, to seek release from teaching in order to write a federal grant for funding the Association.
- Jackie will write a UWRF Institutional Enhancement Grant to fund various activities of the Association and next year’s workshop, and a UWRF Race and Ethnicity Grant to fund scholarships for multicultural students to study abroad. Hossein Eftekari will help write a Classroom Instruction grant for the purchase of videos on international development. Would someone want to volunteer to write a UW-System Race and Ethnicity grant or a different grant to support the work of the Association?
- Jackie will hire a student to maintain our web site and list serve.
- Brent will contact Marcus Babaoye (Institutional Research) about the use of Sedona for acquiring information about members’ various expertise.
- Meg volunterred to use the information about our members (above) to develop a Speakers’ Bureau.
- Members of the Association will participate in International Education Week, which will help maintain our visibility and enhance international education.
- The Association will at some point open our list-serve to colleagues at other regional educational and other institutions, and plan for a regional conference as one way to maintain both local and regional visibility.
- Jackie will organize a series of Brown Bag seminars, conducted by Association faculty and staff. At this point, the following are willing to make a presentation: Linda Alvarez (Kenya Project), Margaret Phinney (China Experience), Nancy Parlin (Peace Organizations in Israel and Pakistan), Pascal Ngoboka (Uganda?), and Sylvia Kehoe (Dairy Industry in Zambia). These will be publicized to the campus and local community, and we will ask faculty will encourage their students to attend.
- The Association will host a campus video series with documentary videos and DVDs pertaining to international development and discussants from our association. (We need someone to volunteer to organize this.) These may alternate between Tuesday and Wednesday every two weeks and run from 7-9 p.m. in the University Center Theater.
- Brent will arrange a spacial depiction of the various international offices, committees, and organizations on campus, along with their interconnection. This will formalize our presence and visibility.
- Jackie will publicize all of the events with the UWRF Public Affairs office and with posters and other literature with the Association name and logo printed on them.
- We suggested that we will all place the Association’s name and logo (obtained from Tony Bredahl) on all of our literature associated with grants and activities that we are individually involved in.
