Courses will be avialable on campus, at the Wisconsin Association of Agricultural Educators (WAAE) Professional Development Conference, and online.
This course will help develop the knowledge of elementary teachers regarding the importance and significance of agriculture. Considerable emphasis will be placed on obtaining firsthand knowledge of the agricultural industry to include not only agricultural production, but the areas of processing, distribution, marketing and the new areas such as sustainable agriculture and aquaculture. The teacher will also become familiar with the materials/resources available for teaching agricultural concepts in the elementary school classroom. There is a special course fee of $45.00

The Professional Development Reflection Log provides graduate credit for attending conference sessions and reflecting on how each session can be applied to the individual’s situation. By completing a reflection form (available in the Conference Handbook and online) for each session, 1 credit is earned. All participants must register through UW-River Falls prior to the start of the conference (please see the registration page for specific instructions). Sustainability-Focused Education Programming AGED or ESM 720, (2 credits) ONLINE COURSE - ANTICIPATED OFFERING
Students will examine the necessity and methods for integrating education in community-wide sustainability efforts. The focus will be on the role of non-formal education programs. Students will investigate the theories, models, and tools of non-formal education and apply them to sustainable community development efforts. Co-listed as AGED/ESM 720. Prerequisite: AGED/ESM 707 or consent of instructor.

This class will introduce participants to the analylsis of biological information using computer programs, with an emphasis on DNA sequence analysis.Topics will include an overview of basic molecular biology concepts, accessing sequence databases, sequence alignment, protein structure, microarrays, and applications in phylogenetics, agriculture, and the human genome project.
Concepts in evolutionary biology and strategies for teaching these topics in a secondary science class are emphasized.
