Sustainability-Focused Education Programming - AGED or ESM 720 (2 credits) ONLINE COURSE, class # 9426 or #9439, 06/15/2009 - 08/14/2009

Students will examine the necessity and methods for integrating education in community-wide sustainability efforts. The focus will be on the role of non-formal education programs. Students will investigate the theories, models, and tools of non-formal education and apply them to sustainable community development efforts. Co-listed as AGED/ESM 720. Prerequisite: AGED/ESM 707 or consent of instructor.

Sustainable Agriculture - CROP 568 (3 credits) ONLINE COURSE, Class # 9419, 06/29/2009 - 08/03/2009

An interdisciplinary critical analysis of production agriculture as a sustainable industry. Students will engage in an interactive dialogue about technical, social and economic concepts related to sustainability in production agriculture systems. Concepts include, but are not necessarily limited to, sustaining soil, water and air resources; sustaining the biodiversity, environmental health, energy efficiency, and economic viability of agricultural systems; sustaining rural communities; and organic farming. Students will also learn about government programs and regulations related to sustainability, and will become acquainted with several organizations that promote agricultural sustainability.

Seminar: Supervising Field Experiences - TED 783 (3 credits) ONLINE COURSE - Class # 9510, 07/06/2009 - 07/24/2009

Study of the pedagogical, human relations and assessment skills related to supervising pre-service students in teacher preparation programs. Recent research/literature forms the framework for this class. Students become aware of the need for continuous self-evaluation and understand the supervisory process.

Bioinformatics for Teachers* - BIOL 789: section 01 (2 credits), Class # 9216, 06/15/2009 - 08/14/2009 - ONLINE

This class will introduce participants to the analysis of biological information using computer programs, with an emphasis on DNA sequence analysis. Topics will include an overview of basic molecular biology concepts, accessing sequence databases, sequence alignment, protein structure, microarrays, and applications in phylogenetics, agriculture, and the human genome project.

Teachers will expand their knowledge, skills and resources for teaching this complex and socially controversial subject.
