English Language Proficiency Information

Regular Admission

If your first language is not English* and you wish to apply for regular admission to UW-River Falls, you should submit an official score report from one of the following:

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a minimum score of 80 (internet based), 214 (computer based), or 550 (paper based)

or

International English Language Testing System (IELTS) with a minimum band score of 6.5

Official score reports should be sent directly to UW-River Falls from TOEFL or IELTS.

Conditional Admission

If you do not have an official TOEFL or IELTS score or if your scores do not meet the minimum requirements, you may be "conditionally admitted" to the university.

Conditional Admission means that you are academically qualified for admission to UW-River Falls but that you have not met the English language requirement. Conditionally admitted students will study full or part-time in the English Language Transition Program (ELT) at UW-River Falls until they have attained the necessary English language skills and can transition into their undergraduate program courses.

Students applying for conditional admission:

  • receive a TOEFL / IELTS waiver (official score report not required)
  • should submit all other required application materials
  • are issued a letter of acceptance and I-20 (if needed)

The TOEFL or IELTS score report requirement may also be waived (not required) if:

A. you have studied at an English language program in the United States with a satisfactory recommendation from program staff and are eligible to transfer. A document confirming your enrollment in the program should be sent directly to UW-River Falls from the English language program.

B. you have completed a university-level English composition course at a college or university in the United States. An official transcript must be sent directly to UW-River Falls from the college or university.

All students admitted to UW-River Falls take an on-campus English placement exam and Mathematics skill placement test upon arrival. Based on the results, you will:

  • take all undergraduate courses
  • take part-time undergraduate program courses and part-time ESL courses
  • take all ESL courses until you have attained the necessary English language skills and can transition into your undergraduate program courses

*For students whose native language is English, the SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) or ACT (American College Testing) may be required. The official SAT or ACT score report is to be sent directly to UW-River Falls from testing agency. The SAT college code for UW-RF is 1918. The ACT college code for UW-RF is 4678.
