2. In recognition of the additional workload, there will be a payment to each chair on an annual basis of an additional sum that goes with the appointment and does not become part of the individual's base salary. The amount will be $500 for chairs of departments with nine or fewer members and $1,000 for chairs of departments with ten or more. Present chairs will receive the difference between the amount added initially to their base and the new guidelines. Following their replacement as department chairs, only the additional amount will be removed.
A further initiative, which was recommended by the Faculty Senate as part of a department chair's compensation package, was a change in the length of appointment for chairs from five to three years. This change will take effect as of November 1, 1987. Current chairs will complete their terms as indicated on their appointment letter and chair appointments after November 1 will conform to the new guidelines.
