The Falcon Promise: A Student Investment through Differential Tuition

The Falcon Promise is a partnership between students and the University. The goal of the Falcon Promise is to increase student retention and success, especially for students having significant financial need, and to enhance the learning environment at UW-River Falls. 

The Falcon Promise is a differential tuition initiative that invests students funds in four initiatives of importance to students and to the success of UW-River Falls: Tutoring, Undergraduate Research Opportunities, Increased Student Scholarships: The Falcon Scholars Challenge, Enhanced Learning Spaces 


 

There are many funding resources that support URSCA including:

  • Falcon Grants (UWRF) – Part of student differential tuition fees are contributed toward this program. Students wishing to participate in URSCA are able to apply for a Falcon Grant to fund their scholarly work.
  • Falcon Scholars (UWRF) – New scholarship program this year providing $4,000 that will be used to support Falcon Scholar study abroad and/or participation in undergraduate research, scholarly or creative activity. 
  • McNair Scholars Program (UWRF) - Each year, twelve to fifteen new undergraduate McNair Scholars are selected for two years of intensive mentoring which comprises of many opportunities including undergraduate research.  This program assists eligible low-income, first-generation students to prepare for and enter graduate programs leading to a doctoral degree.
  • National Science Foundation, Research Experience for Undergraduate Researchlink (National) - The Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program supports active research participation by undergraduate students in any of the areas of research funded by the National Science Foundation. REU projects involve students in meaningful ways in ongoing research programs or in research projects specifically designed for the REU program.
  • Student Health and Counseling Services Faculty/Staff/and Student Mini-Grantdocument (UWRF)  -  The program encourages UWRF faculty/academic staff/ and students to submit proposals regarding a project or research relating to improving the health of UWRF students. The program has three main objectives: 1. Enhance student learning opportunities. Provide an opportunity for students to enhance their skills and contribute to improving the health of students in general.  2. Encourage student and faculty/academic staff collaboration. Provide an opportunity for students to work with faculty/staff on a project or to conduct research to further enhance students skills while working to improve the health of students overall.  3. Promote scholarly activity. Provide an opportunity for faculty/staff to work with students to contribute positively to the body of knowledge relating to improving the health of college students.  More information, contact Alice Reilly-Myklebust in Student Health Services at ext. 3293. One grant is available each year.
  • Student Stipends & Expenses Grant Competitiondocument budget formdocument (UWRF by Falcon Promise) - Grants are available on a competitive basis. These funds are intended to cover expenses necessary to conduct research (supplies, travel to conduct research, books, software, posters, printing, etc.) and/or stipends to compensate for time allocated to project.
  • Sustainability Incubatordocument (UWRF) - The initiative is purposely focused on a triple-bottom line research opportunity consistent with the undergraduate research, scholarly, and creative activity program across all disciplines, departments, and colleges.  In parallel, it will foster collaborative faculty-student research, to enhance student learning and promote a multi-disciplinary culture of research, scholarship, and creative activities at UWRF.  
  • Undergraduate Course Redesign Grantdocument (UWRF) - This grant is funded by Falcon Promise funds the students dedicated to URSCA.  These funds are available to UWRF faculty and Instructional Academic Staff interested in developing or enhancing a course to include an URSCA component.  Applications are welcome from all colleges and disciplines. 
  • UWRF Summer Scholars Program (UWRF) - The purpose of this program is to foster collaborative faculty-student project, to enhance student learning and promote the culture of research, scholarly, and creative activities at UWRF. 10-12 students each summer, along with their mentors, are supported with stipends to perform scholarly research.  Learn more about the UWRF Summer Scholars Program on YouTube
