We, the Student Association Student Senate of the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, strive to meet the wants and needs of the students we represent by providing them with a student organization that is truly representative of the whole. We will advocate the issues that promote continued quality, excellence and affordability at our school. It is the goal of Senate to provide students with opportunities to improve their lives on academic, personal, and social levels; furthermore, we hope to empower students with the resources necessary for them to advance in their education. We will become knowledgeable of student concerns at every level and act in the best interest of the student body.
The senators attend all meetings of the senate, which take place at 7:00pm on Tuesdays in the Willow River Room of the University Center. The senators maintain ten office hours every two weeks. Student Senators support endeavors of the senate such as the Get Out the Vote campaign. Finally, senators sit on two of many university committees ranging from Academic Policy and Programs to University Budget, and hold a position on one of seven Student Senate committees.
Student Senate came about in an effort to allow a direct voice of the student body into the university's administrative policies and procedures with the passage of Wisconsin statute 36.09(5) which reads: The students of each institution or campus subject to the responsibilities and powers of the board, the president, the chancellor, and the faculty shall be active participants in the immediate governance of and policy development for such institutions. As such, students shall have the primary responsibility for the formulation and review of policies concerning student life, services, and interests. Students in consultation with the chancellor and subject to the final confirmation of the board shall have the responsibility for the disposition of those student fees which constitute substantial support for campus student activities. The students of each institution or campus shall have the right to organize themselves in a manner they determine and to select their representatives to participate in institutional governance.
The Student Senate is a non-partisan organization that consists of 25 members. Individual Senators represent a designated constituency and collectively the Student Senate strives to represent the needs of the entire campus! Senators are elected or appointed for one year terms and are not subject to term limits. Elections are held every fall and spring semester. Voting for the UW-River Fall Student Senate elections takes place online. The Student Senate Office can be found in the Involvement Center of the University Center.
