Spring Break 2014, March 14-23

This year's domestic participants will focus on a variety of social issues serving a several different agencies across the United States.
Journey to Hope CommUnity Center to learn more about Immigration
Hope CommUnity is dedicated to empowerment of central Florida's immigrant and working poor communities through education, advocacy and personal growth. Although Apopka has a population of over 40,000 people the issues continue to go unrecognized even within the state of Florida. Over the years, to bring light and assistance to those in need, the organization has fostered the development of many self-help, community and worker organizations to meet basic human needs. Upon arrival the group will be introduced to their home stay family. Along their journey, Destination participants will learn of the many struggles Apopka has endured including poverty, immigration issues, unemployment, racial tension, gang violence, among other pressing issues.
**NOTE: This is an immersion experience. Destination participants on this trip will be placed with one other trip member in a local Hope CommUnity Center family where they will live for the week. Participants will interact with other Destination members throughout the week, while being truly immersed in the Apopka community.
Journey to Living Lands and Waters to learn more about the Environment
You can be a part of an organization that has grown and developed into the only 'industrial strength' river cleanup opportunity like it in the world. Living Lands and Waters is a non-profit environmental organization that is dedicated to restoring the environment. As a participant on this trip you will take part in the river cleanups, watershed conservation initiatives, workshops, tree planting and other conservation efforts. Living Lands and Waters sends teams all over the world to educate and help where there is need. Tennessee's rivers are being devastated by the pollution and unclean materials being dumped into the water. You will experience the hard work and satisfaction of helping restore nature to its natural state. We are not only living on this earth, we are one with it.
Journey to Medici Project to learn more about Urban Poverty/Social Justice
Medici Project exists to equip millennials in influencing culture by serving others. What better way to influence than learning how to serve with strategy and hand on opportunities? From engaging in homeless shelters, refugee camps, urban educational opportunities, and exploring concepts of social entrepreneurship, alternative break trips with Medici Project offers a full range of opportunities to serve those experiencing poverty and hardship in the urban context.
Hurricane Katrina is known as one of the deadliest hurricanes that this country has ever faced. It has been eight years since Katrina, and people all over are still feeling the effect of this natural disaster. The mission of Rebuilding Together is to make a continuing volunteer effort to improve the quality of life of low income homeowners, particularly those who are elderly, disabled, or single head of households with children, through home repair and revitalization of New Orleans' neighborhoods. Since volunteers are involved in restoring and revitalizing homes from the floor up, Destination participants will be helping in various stages of home reconstruction. One house at a time, we can help the city of New Orleans.

If you could be anything in nature, what would you be and why? If I could be anything in nature, I would be a maple tree because they are strong and beautiful and make people happy. When I was little I would run and jump into a big pile of leaves over and over again--that was my favorite thing about fall! :) Now I enjoy looking at the beautiful colors the leaves turn in the fall, using the maple syrup my dad makes from the sap, and breathing the fresh air they help to provide. Plus they have a different wardrobe for every season! haha.
What is your favorite place in River Falls? My favorite place in River Falls is the Falls Theatre. I love the atmosphere and it makes going to the movies affordable. Back home, even small popcorn is about $7!
If you had advice for someone interested in Destination, what would you tell them? Destination is life-changing. You should definitely take advantage of the amazing opportunity to learn more about an issue and yourself while having a positive impact in your area of service. Also, talk with other people who have participated in Destination; their stories can help you become more aware of issues such as immigration and invasive species, and inspire you to make a difference as well.

If you could be a season, which one would be you be and why? If I could be a season, I would be fall. First of all, my hair is auburn with a mix of red, blond, brown, and black; similarly, autumn brings with it leaves of many different colors. Though I love summer, I have always looked forward to fall with the beautiful colors, crunchy leaves, and cozy clothes and bonfires.

What is your favorite place in River Falls? The Kinnickinnic River, I just about wrote a trout stream for what I would want to be in nature. As an avid fisherman I love the Kinnickinnic for its remarkable beauty and amazing fishing...when life gets stressful I head to the Kinni
If you had advice for someone interested in Destination, what would you tell them? Get involved! The satisfaction that comes from serving others and the memories made on your Destination trips are priceless. College should not be remembered by the countless hours studying, but rather by the priceless memories made. Destination is a great way to make these memories while giving back and helping others.

If you could be anything in nature, what would you be and why? I would love to be an old growth tree --one of the giants that gets to witness centuries while harboring an ecosystem of its own within its branches. To me, trees are incredibly calming and symbolize quiet strength, perseverance and wisdom.

If you could be a season, which one would be you be and why? I would be one loooong summer. I thrive being and working outside, especially working with plants. Summer encourages people to gather away from electronics, go on adventures, camp, grow and eat fresh produce, and it thaws all the tightness I feel from a long winter. (I might have answered this question differently without this sad, late spring). ;)
What is an interesting fact we don’t know about you? This summer I'll be spending 3 months at Shasta Trinity National Forest in Northern California. I'll be a resource management intern doing pretty diverse tasks. I'm pretty excited. I feel like my experience on the Moab, Utah Destination trip helped me get my internship.
