  • In general, Minnesota and its counties have lower proportions of their residents younger than 65 without health insurance coverage than Wisconsin and its counties, perhaps because Wisconsin has opted to not participate in the Medicaid expansion program offered under the Affordable Care Act.
  • Around one-in-ten residents of Burnett County lack health insurance coverage.

  • The proportion of residents under 65 in Wisconsin and Pierce and St. Croix counties who lack health insurance coverage has been trending down since about 2013. Such proportion has risen in Polk and Burnett counties since 2020.
  • Polk and Burnett Counties have higher percentages of their populations without health insurance coverage than the Wisconsin average.
  • Pierce and St. Croix Counties have lower proportions of their populations without health insurance coverage than the Wisconsin average.

  • Both Washington and Chisago Counties have consistently had lower proportions of their populations without health insurance coverage than the Minnesota average.
