  • Minnesota counties have a much higher proportion of households in which English is not spoken exclusively compared to Wisconsin.
  • Washington County has about three times the proportion of non-English-exclusive speaking households than the other five counties in the region.

  • In Wisconsin, slightly more than 8% of households don’t speak English exclusively at home, and this rate has remained relatively stable since 2009. 
  • The proportion of households in Burnett, Polk, Pierce, and St. Croix counties for which English is not the only language spoken in the home, is less than half of the state average. These proportions have also been steady over time.

  • The proportion of households that are not exclusively English-speaking has been trending upward in Minnesota since 2009 but has been flat since 2019.
  • The proportion of non-exclusive English-speaking households in Chisago County fell slowly from 2011 to 2017, and has somewhat improved since 2017. However, the 2022 proportion is still well below the 2011 peak.
