Interns indicate duties performed

I took food shelf appointments working directly with clients. I also helped them budget and get government assistance forms and info. I also helped them by doing emergency food, diapers, etc. Worked in the thrift store which directly benefits the food shelf. I sorted, cashiered, inventoried, and hung clothes. I got out into the community doing food bags and spreading our name.

Students identified positive aspects of this placement:

Helping people in my community. Learning about local food shelf ins/outs. Being part of a non-profit. Being in the community representing Hastings Family Services. Setting up my own visits with grocery stores. Learning thrift shop maintenance.

Students identified difficulties typical in this placement: 

Emotional clients (sad stories, tears). Dealing with those who take advantage of the services we provide.

Students identified qualities/characteristics required to be successful at this placement: 

Strong people skills on all levels, able to work directly with clients, ability to seek help and make sound decisions, able to have 4 different superiors helping and specialized in different areas.
