Scene Shop

University Theatre Scene Shop

Shop employees must be able to work independently and as team members. In the scene shop you must have some experience with power tools, hand tools or painting.  All scene shop student employees will complete a safety training session.  Your supervisor will familiarize you with the production you are working on; with the number of sets and designs to be created.  You may be asked to

  • Use power or hand tools to measure and cut wood, plywood or fabric
  • Work with plaster and other construction materials
  • Paint floors, walls or set pieces
  • Assemble room sets and outdoor sets
  • Lift 30 pounds by yourself or up to 100 pounds with assistance  

The technical director works with sound and lighting.  As an assistant you must be able to adapt you knowledge of technology to the stage or have prior stage tech experience.   You may be asked to   

  • Work with computers, electricity and wiring
  • Handle fragile bulbs and equipment
  • Climb narrow stairways and onto catwalks   

The set designer creates the look and details of the set on stage.  A helpful assistant has some artistic talent or at least some construction and painting experience.  You may be asked to  

  • Work with power or hand tools
  • Paint
  • Retrieve and return props and set items from the trap room
