About the Position

Hall Directors (HD) are responsible for the overall leadership and management of one or two residence halls while engaging with 250-500 residents in their assigned area.

HDs play an integral role in the development of educationally-focused and inclusive residence hall communities that support the personal and educational success of all residents. The HD accomplishes this by maintaining visibility within the community and developing strong relationships with students.

It is also through the supervision of 7-12 Resident Assistants (RA) and implementation of a Residence Hall Curriculum that the HD creates a sense of community and an educational experience for residents.

HDs have responsibilities that take place during the evening hours and weekends. To support HDs in maintaining healthy work/life harmony, departmental staff values and role models time away.

Residence Education Curriculum - Community Development

Residence hall communities are both proximity and relationship based in nature. To assist with the building of relationships we expect HDs to take an intentionally active role in developing their communities. HDs are expected to use a community development lens in all apects of their work. The position description was designed to ensure that HDs are giving time during the week to build relationships with and between residents and implement opportunities for engagement and learning.

Conduct

Our conduct system exists to provide students alleged of violating Residence Life policies the opportunity to meet with a member of the Residence Life staff to discuss the incident. Rooted in an educational philosophy, our process is designed to address inappropriate or illegal behavior with the goal of improving future behavior for the overall benefit of our communities and the individual. HDs on average have three conduct meetings per week, most are regarding violations of our Lockout policy, and Courtesy and Quiet Hours policy.

On-Call System

We utilize an on-call system where RAs are expected to contact the HD on-call after business hours as issues arise. This provides other HDs the ability to have evenings when they are not meeting with students or hosting programs to be away from work. HDs work together to create a schedule in which an HD is on-call once every 8 weeks. On average, the HD on-call can expect about two calls per day with most calls between 4:30 p.m. - 12 a.m.

Compensation

Hall Directors are compensated with an annual salary of $35,568 for a 12-month appointment. They also receive a 60-block meal plan each semester, one parking pass and partially furnished on-campus apartment. 

Benefits

Annually, HDs are granted 22 days of paid vacation, 9 legal holidays, and 4.5 days of personal days. HDs also accrue 22 days of sick leave for the first 18 months of employment, then 12 days a year after that. HDs have a comprehensive fringe benefit package including family health, dental, vision, life and accident insurance options, pharmacy benefits, well-being resources, as well as income continuation insurance and retirement savings programs.

Domestic Partner/Spouse Policy

A spouse or domestic partner and/or children (18 years old or younger) may reside in the apartment with the Hall Director. Parking space and meal plan are provided only for the Hall Director, although Hall Directors may use their meal plan to bring family members into the dining hall. Additional parking passes may also be purchased for a fee. 

Insurance coverage and leave benefits are available to individuals in a domestic partnership. 

Pet Policy

Hall Directors are allowed to have a pet (including most breeds of cats, dogs, or fish) in their apartment. A Hall Director must agree to the expectations set by the Department including paying at $150 cleaning fee. Animals must have all shots, vaccinations, and licenses.

The city of River Falls is a thriving and growing community located 30 miles east of the Minneapolis/St. Paul area in northwestern Wisconsin.
