As a college student, one of your primary forms of transportation may be walking. There are key steps to maintaining your personal safety when walking, whether on or off campus.
When crossing streets, use designated crosswalks. Before crossing, be confident the oncoming vehicle is yielding the right of way to ensure your safety.
Avoid walking alone, especially at night.
Don't jog or run at night.
Avoid taking shortcuts when walking, especially dark alleys. Always stick to the well-lit streets.
Don't carry valuables when walking alone. Leave laptops, credit cards, large amounts of cash in a safe place to reduce being a target.
Try to stay in areas where there are large amounts of people or other pedestrian traffic.
If you are being harassed, draw attention to yourself by shouting and head toward any facility where people are present.
Always carry personal identification with you.
Stay alert and be aware of your surroundings. Using your cell phone or listening to music may distract you, making you an easier target for criminals.
Trust your instincts. If something or someone makes you uneasy, avoid the person and leave the area.
