The College of Education is committed to the excellence in the preparation and continuing education of teachers at all levels. Secondary education is for those interested in teaching grades 6-12. Study in the field of education offers a chance to develop skills that will enable one to have an impact on the social, personal, and intellectual development of others. Students work with professional education faculty who will help them develop a strong knowledge base in their discipline and in the pedagogical skills to teach it.
There are three options for secondary education students. Option A consists of one departmental major and minor, Option B consists of two departmental majors, and Option C consists of a broad field major.
Some popular majors include biology, chemistry, communication studies, English, mathematics, and physics. Some popular minors include anthropology, chemistry, English, mathematics, political science, biology, coaching, economics, history, and teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL). Some broad field majors include broad field social studies and broad field English.
The secondary education major offers undergraduate students a unique program which coordinates their academic coursework with a broad range of teaching experiences in high school level. In keeping with the missions of university, our students are immersed in working partnerships with “real” schools, teachers, and children. This allows them to apply their knowledge and decision-making skills as they learn them in their classes. It is our goal to educate future teacher who are aware of the rewards and challenges involved in education and are prepared to become contributing members of that learning community upon graduation.
There are plenty of clubs and organizations for secondary education students to get involved in. Some popular clubs include Tomorrow’s Educators, Big Brother Big Sister, Service-based clubs, and habitat for Humanity. Students also join clubs that directly relate to the subject they are majoring in.
During the first semester, students who are going into education will begin observing. Every year students have to fulfill specific observation hours. After the four years of classes and observing, students are placed in schools for student teaching.
