Jeanne Wold

Jeanne Wold PortraitJeanne Wold was a vocal instructor for 33 years at UW-RF.  She was born near Barron, WI, in 1930 and graduated from the Barron High School in 1948.  She sang in the choir, played trumpet with the concert and marching bands, and played piano and performed solos with a 17 piece Jazz Ensemble.  Following high school, she attended River Falls Teachers College for one year, then transferred to St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN, from which she graduated in 1952 with a Music Education degree.  Jeanne studied in and performed with an opera workshop at the University of Wisconsin - Madison in the summer of 1959.  She studied voice with Norman Gulbrandsen at Northwestern University in Evanston for one semester in 1968.

During the summer of 1954, Jeanne was hired to perform weekly solos at Trinity Lutheran Church in Moorhead, Minnesota.  Jeanne began teaching vocal music in the public school system in Nora Springs, Iowa, then Prairie de Sac, Wisconsin, in Glyndon, Minnesota, and Calmar, Iowa.  She also taught the total music programs at Heltonville, Indiana, in 1954-55.  Her duties there included preparing the marching band for half-time shows at all home basketball games.  She was also honored to conduct an all-district choral festival in rehearsal and performance at Bedford, Indiana, in 1955.

Jeanne was hired by the UW-RF Music Department as a part-time Voice Instructor at the beginning of the second semester in 1963-64.  As the need arose to serve an ever-growing number of students, she was promoted to full-time instructor and taught 45 students each term.  She retired from the university in 1996, following nearly 33 years of teaching private voice lessons.

Jeanne was an excellent soprano soloist and performed both on and off campus.  She soloed with the University Orchestra and took part in a number of faculty recitals.  She performed, as soloist, with the Bradford High School Orchestra and also at Waverly, Iowa with the Wartburg College - Community Orchestra.  In 1971 Jeanne performed the soprano solo in Poulenc's "Gloria" while travelling with the UW-RF Concert Choir throughout their European tour.  She also sang with the UW-RF Alumni Choir throughout her tenure, including seven of the Alumni Choir's European tours.  Jeanne judged a great number of public school district and state solo and ensemble events in Wisconsin and Minnesota.  She died in 2011.
