UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN River Falls

Music Program

Applied Music Policies

  1. Consistently failing grades or frequent withdrawals from applied music courses may result in a student being declared ineligible for further applied music study.
  2. Incompletes are to be made up during the next term the student is on campus. Failure to make up an incomplete may render the student ineligible to register for applied music until the deficiency is corrected.
  3. Music Education Majors must register for 2 applied credits (primary instrument) per semester for a total of 8 credits at the 100 level and 6 credits at the 300 level. Broad Area Music Majors must register for 2 applied credits (primary instrument) per semester for a total of 8 credits at the 100 level and 8 credits at the 300 level. Liberal Arts Music Majors must register for 1 credit (primary instrument) per semester for a total of 4 credits at the 100 level. If a secondary applied area is taken, it must be for 1 credit per semester at the 100 level. 2 credit 300 level courses in a secondary applied can be taken if the Upper Level Applied Music Audition is passed (see following page).
  4. 300 level applied music is open only to music majors who have completed 4 semesters at the 100 level, passed an audition to be accepted into the 300 level, received permission of the instructor to register for the 300 level.
  5. Students may not register for more than two areas of applied music during any one term without the permission of each applied instructor, the student’s advisor, and the department chair.
  6. Juries are required for each applied music course taken.
  7. Exceptions to the above policies must be approved by the department chair and the applied instructor.

Students are expected to practice a minimum of six hours a week for each applied credit. Most practice rooms are available on a first come-first serve basis. Some practice rooms may have a sign-up sheet posted on the door to reserve a practice time and may require a key for entry. Practice room keys may be obtained ($5 deposit) in the Music Department Office.
