Language Lab

Our multimedia language lab offers many digital resources for UWRF students including high speed internet, language-specific software, dictionaries, books and other media, and more. These resources will boost your skill in both speaking and understanding your target language.

The lab provides an excellent study environment run by the Modern Languages Academic Department Associate. We also employ student workers who are skilled in one or more languages. They are eager to assist students with the available lab resources.


Language Round Table

Come practice your language skills with your peers in an informal setting! You do not have to be enrolled in a language class to participate. Come prepared to speak the language and have fun learning!

Modern Languages Library

Visit our library! Our collection of films, movies, literature and dictionaries are useful for research papers or language projects. If you would like to check one out, please come see Eva Opseth in KFA 286.

Books in Spanish, French, German, Chinese, and Japanese.Collection of films include: documentaries, old-time movies, and movies from other countries, cultural expositions, and much more!

Hours: Tuesday - Friday 7:55 AM - 12:55 PM


Online Language Resources

UW-Independent Learning
Students of UWRF are able to study French, German, Italian, Latin or Spanish online. Students who are currently enrolled on a full-time basis at any UW System institution (other than UW-Stout) may be eligible for enrollment in an Independent Learning course without paying additional tuition in accordance with UW System Administrative Policy 805, section 6, A, A.15 on Multiple Campus Enrollments. Click here to learn more about UW tuition waivers. 

Foreign Services Institute
Designed by professional linguists for the U.S. government, these free materials are created with the goal of aiding users gain fluency. Lessons are organized around grammar and repetition. In addition to more popular languages, the site offers resources for learning lesser-studied options like Romanian, Igbo, Serbo-Croatian, and many more.

Memrise
This site features countless categories of so-called “mems.” user-generated mnemonic flashcards that rely on graphics, humor, and imagination to solidify new vocabulary. The site hosts thousands of free courses in many languages and you can even upload your own mems for other users to view.

Duolingo
This is a free user-friendly site uses drills involving a mix of reading, writing, listening, and speaking. The app allows you to follow and congratulate your friends when they have completed milestones.
