Interns work with an experienced Washington editor to choose, report, write and edit multimedia stories using social media, blogs, videos and slideshows. Tours of Washington journalism and government institutions and guest speakers are part of the program.

Fall 2013 (Sept. 4 to Dec. 10) Stipend $2,660, plus free housing.

The fellow maintains our website, so applicants must have excellent html and CMS skills. The fellow teaches multimedia skills to undergraduate interns – including the use of DSLR cameras and video editing – coordinates group projects and produces his or her own stories.

Internships are highly recommended!

Getting on-the-job experience is an essential part of preparing for a career in journalism and other mass communications fields. Although internships are not required for journalism students, the journalism faculty strongly recommends that all journalism majors acquire at least one internship experience before graduating.

Credit option. Internships may be taken for academic credit or non-credit. If you wish to use a journalism internship for academic credit, you must complete the steps outlined in the Journalism Academic Internship INSTRUCTIONS before the internship begins.

The journalism internship (JOUR 379) is 1-3 credits and would count toward your Journalism Electives requirement. Only 3 internship credits are allowed in the journalism major/minor. Grading is on a PASS/FAIL basis.

Check out the links above, but don't limit yourself to them—many employers do not advertise their internships. If you have a specific employer in mind, call them and ask if they offer internship opportunities—you may be pleasantly surprised.
