Extended Housing

WHAT IS EXTENDED HOUSING?

The University uses extended housing space for students who are unable to be assigned a permanent space.  Extended housing space is typically a secure and lockable lounge space that has been converted to a residence hall room. These rooms are located within a residence hall community and offer students most, if not all, the amenities of a regular room - bed, table and chairs instead of desks, drawers, hanging space for clothes, Internet and cable TV connection, and a refrigerator. Since these rooms are larger, each room can accommodate four to six roommates. Some students may also be assigned to share a double room with a Resident Assistant (RA). These types of assignments, even though they are located in a regular double room, will also be considered extended housing and the student will be reassigned as permanent space becomes available.

WHY DID I GET ASSIGNED TO EXTENDED HOUSING?

Sometimes the student demand for housing is greater than the number of permanent spaces we have to offer on campus. As assignments are processed, at some point, space reserved in permanent rooms is filled. Once that happens, students are assigned to extended housing. Generally, a student who has a signed contract date in April or later has a greater chance of being assigned to extended housing.

WHERE DO I GET MY MAIL?

Those students living in extended housing will pick their mail up at the front desk of their residence hall. They will need to bring their student ID in order to receive their mail.

WHAT SHOULD I BRING?

Since it is likely you will be sharing this room with multiple roommates, we advise against bringing large items until you have a permanent room assignment. We encourage you to bring items on an “as needed” basis.

MOVING TO A PERMANENT SPACE

As permanent housing space becomes available, Residence Life assignment staff will reassign students out of extended housing. The amount of time a student spends in extended housing varies, depending upon the overall occupancy and when/where a vacancy exists. A key factor is based on the student’s contract signed date. When a student is reassigned from extended housing to a permanent housing, he or she will receive an e-mail sent to their UWRF e-mail. Students will have about four days to transition to their permanent room.

EXTENDED HOUSING ROOM RATE

Extended housing rates are the same as a double room rate in a traditional hall.
