Outdoor Education

The Outdoor Education minor provides a broad foundation of courses, activities, and experiences for students interested in utilizing outdoor and adventure experiences to promote personal growth and group development.

Though open to all students, the minor is an ideal complement for majors such as:

• Conservation and Environmental Planning
• Environmental Science
• Health and Physical Education
• Exercise and Sport Science
• Social Work

Activity-focused courses will allow students to build basic skills in outdoor activities such as:

• Backpacking
• Canoeing
• Indoor & outdoor rock climbing
• Ice climbing
• Nordic & Alpine skiing (or snowboarding)
• High ropes challenge courses
• Cycling
• Winter camping

Classroom-based courses provide knowledge in areas such as:

• Learning theory and models
• Safety and risk management
• Facilitation/processing
• Connection to nature
• Leave No Trace
• Leadership
• Judgement
• Sustainability
• Professional ethics

Outdoor Education students will have opportunities to attend regional and national professional conferences to network with other students and professionals in the field and promote their professional development.
