Adapted Physical Education Minor


Students who successfully complete all required coursework and clinical experiences in the Adapted Physical Education minor program are eligible for the Wisconsin Adapted Physical Education Teaching licensure (WI #860 Early Childhood-Adolescence).

The Adapted Physical Education Minor at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls prepares future/present educators who can modify, adapt, direct and test rudimentary movement processes, theories, and curricular components for individuals with disabilities. This program is planned to train Physical Education teachers in providing quality special (adapted) physical education for school children with disabilities in the least restrictive, most appropriate, and most inclusive environments. The critical component of this Adapted Physical Education minor program is to provide students with the most enriching learning experiences possible by combining theory with lecture and practical coursework.  

Students in the program will gain knowledge, skills, and hands-on experience in teaching students with disabilities fundamental motor skills and patterns, physical and motor fitness, as well as skills in aquatics, individual activities, group games and disability sports. Students will receive extensive contact hours in the public schools and on-campus programs working with students with disabilities. This minor is also highly encouraged for the Health and Physical Education Major to make them more marketable in the Pre-K-12 public school setting.

The Adapted Physical Education minor is for students seeking teacher certification to meet the needs of students with disabilities within physical education. This certification is an "add-on" minor for the Health and Physical Education-Pre-K-12 Physical Education (
Teacher Certifiable) major as part of the baccalaureate program or as a post-baccalaureate program. It is not a stand-alone minor for students seeking any other major.

Clinical Experiences

Clinical experiences for the students in adapted physical education are varied, dependent upon the past experience, present competencies and desired goals of the student. Types of practical experiences may include:

  • Observing special education and adapted physical education classes.
  • Assisting in adapted physical education classes and in aquatic activities.
  • Working with experienced teachers in schools and clinical settings.
  • Planning, assessing and evaluating individualized programs for students aged 3-21 who are disabled, in segregated and mainstreamed classes.
  • Working with parents of students with disabilities.
  • Sitting in on IEP Meetings
  • Task analyzing skill patterns through videotaped lessons.
  • Evaluating the effectiveness of teaching strategies through video taped lessons.
