Falcon Scholars Endowment FAQ's

any lead in info for FAQs?

What is the Falcon Scholars Program?
Fifty to eighty incoming freshman receive a four-year scholarship commitment of $1,000 per year (funded by gifts from donors, like you, to the UWRF Foundation), plus a stipend of $2,000 (funded by student differential tuition) for study abroad or undergraduate research. Gifts to the Falcon Scholars Endowment are placed in a term endowment which is invested in the larger UWRF Foundation endowment pool.

What is the Million Dollar Match?
Through the generosity of five donors, the UWRF Foundation has been challenged to raise $1,000,000 which will be matched dollar for dollar to fund an endowment for UWRF's signature scholarship program, Falcon Scholars.

How does the match work?
Every gift has an impact. Every dollar contributed will be matched to double your gift!

How do I participate?
Make a gift of any amount, set up a recurring gift, or a pledge payable over three years. Faculty and staff of the university can designate a payroll deduction by contacting the UWRF Foundation.

What's an endowment?
Endowed funds exist to provide intended support forever. With a successful match challenge totaling $2,000,000, eighty annual Falcon Scholar awards will be funded in perpetuity.

How are Falcon Scholars selected?
Each year, 50-80 Falcon Scholars are selected from the incoming student applicant pool. A competitive process including an on-campus interview helps determine the awards. Those involved in the interview process include UWRF faculty, staff and alumni.

Can I name the scholarship?
Gifts of $25,000 or more, which can be pledged over several years, by a single donor will create a named Falcon Scholar award.

Can I designate a Falcon Scholars award for a specific major?
While every college and typically every major is represented among the Falcon Scholar recipients, the current selection and awarding process as approved by the University, UWRF Student Senate, and UW Board of Regents seeks to recruit incoming students based on merit regardless of intended academic discipline.

Why is Falcon Scholars so important to UW-River Falls?
Retention rates of Falcon Scholars from first to second year and first to third year are 12-15% higher than their peers. In addition, Falcon Scholars have shown a higher rate of participation in campus activities and organizations than other UWRF students.
