Dr. Swanson’s research interest involves the examination of normal language development and language disorders. She recently studied the communication abilities of children with CHARGE syndrome. CHARGE is a rare genetic disorder with anomalies in every sense modality. The communication skills of children with CHARGE vary greatly.

Another area of interest is narrative development. Dr. Swanson was involved in the development of Narrative-Based Language Development (Swanson, Fey, Mills, & Hood, 2005). She recently supervised a master’s thesis involving the use of NBLI with children who have cochlear implants.
