Our Mission

The mission of the English Language Transition (ELT) Program is to assist non-native English learners to develop and strengthen the knowledge and language skills necessary to achieve their academic, professional, and personal goals. The ELT Program provides a supportive learning environment for students while fostering social and intercultural understanding. 

Why choose the ELT program at UWRF?

• Upon completion of the ELT program, students are assured admittance to UWRF without needing to take another TOEFL or IELTS exam

In the Classroom

The goal of the ELT Program is to strengthen students' academic skills. This goal is accomplished by a variety of classroom activities, which include

• Speaking through classroom discussions and presentations
  
• Learning academic note-taking skills
• Developing reading comprehension skills 
• Acquiring academic writing skills
• Expanding critical thinking skills
• Increasing vocabulary
  
• Focusing on clear pronunciation

UW-River Falls offers ESL courses at three levels: low-intermediate, intermediate, and advanced.  Students are placed in classes based on the ELT Placement Procedures.

Campus Life and Extracurricular Activities

An important part of the International Student experience is to learn about the people and customs of the United States.  The UWRF Office of Student Life has many opportunities for students to be involved on campus and in the community.
