Benefits of Online Learning

Back to Online Help

Lower Cost

All students taking a course that is completely online pay the same tuition as a Wisconsin resident, regardless of residency.

Convenient communication

Most communication in an online course is through e-mail and discussion boards within the Desire2Learn (D2L) course management site. Learn@UW River Falls is the name for our implementation of Desire2Learn.

Interaction with instructor and classmates

Some courses are designed as independent study courses, and you will have very little, if any, interaction with other students. In other courses, discussion among students is an essential component and you will participate in discussion boards or chat rooms.

UWRF also offers "blended" courses where you will have face-to-face meetings combined with online activities.

Flexibility in time and location

You can participate in an online course anywhere there is a computer with Internet access. Most activities use an asynchronous format, which means you can read and post messages at times that are convenient to you. Some courses are designed so you can complete them at your own pace; others will have set due dates by which you must have completed certain assignments.

Same academic expectations/learning outcomes

There is no difference between how a traditional class and an online class is listed on your transcript. You can expect to do a similar amount of work in an online class as you would in a traditional face-to-face class.

Access to student services

Even though you may never come to the UW-River Falls campus, you are part of our community! With the exception of health services, you also have access to the same resources available to on-campus students.
