Theatre Arts

Academic Program

The theatre major is designed to expose students to all aspects of theatre. Core courses are required in acting, directing, history and technology. Advanced courses are offered in areas of special interest such as Advanced Acting, Arts Management, Playwriting, Playwrights of Color, Costume and Fashion or Children's Theatre and Puppetry. Many opportunities exist for students to apply classroom skills in studio and lab productions. Advanced students may have opportunities to design or direct on the main stage for academic credit or pursue internships with one of over 100 vital theatre companies in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area.

The department offers a Theatre minor and with the music department, a Musical Theatre Minor. Theatre students pursue minors or double major in a variety of departments and programs.

Production Program

University Theatre produces three shows a year. The plays vary in style, period and genre. Students perform, build and run the productions and are encouraged to take on major production responsibilities. Theatre professionals are frequently brought to campus to work with students. Many productions are entered in the American College Theatre Festival for adjudication and students are selected to participate in the acting and design competitions at the regional and national level.

Student Theatre Organizations

Masquers produces, supports and promotes student involvement in theatre. Each year Masquers produces one major production giving students full responsibility in all creative and technical areas. Past shows have included such holiday favorites as A Christmas Carol, classical pieces like Antigone, and works by contemporary playwrights. Masquers also produces a one-act festival, sponsors workshops and organizes field trips.

Alpha Psi Omega is a national theatre honorary society. Students who are strongly involved in the theatre program may be elected to membership.
