We are assessing the new program by following students in both the traditional and Organic First curricula. Our data collection includes student demographic data (major, pre-professional programs, ACT scores, gender, HS class rank), tracking and surveying non-progressing students, and student surveys (CSCI, surveying student self-concept, (Bauer, C.F. J. Chem. Ed. 2005, 82, 1864) and CHEMX, assessing students’ cognitive expectations in learning chemistry (Grove, N.P.; Bretz, S.L. J. Chem. Ed., 2007, 84, 1524)). We are assessing students in both the traditional and new chemistry sequence.
In the analytical course, both cohorts (traditional and Organic First) students will be combined in the same class. We will use evaluations of student learning in this class as an additional assessment of the curricula.
