Marketing consists of the processes that organizations use for developing, communicating, and delivering products and services that create value for consumers, other organizations, and society at large.


The mission of the Marketing program is to educate and prepare students to become life-long learners able to adapt to a constantly changing global business environment.  As a result of quality teaching encompassing both academic and practical experiences, students will develop marketing knowledge and skills equipping them for successful careers.

The marketing program supports the missions of the College of Business and Economics and UWRF by contributing expertise in strategic marketing planning; market segmentation & positioning; the marketing mix; retailing; services; consumer behavior; business to business marketing; and marketing research.

What is the focus of the program?

The marketing curriculum at UWRF involves coverage of the ways business firms analyze, plan, administer, and control their resources to achieve marketing objectives.   The curriculum includes a focus on both consumer and business to business markets.  Courses include: Principles of Marketing, Consumer Behavior, Marketing Research, Marketing Strategy, Retail Management, Promotional Strategy, International Marketing, Services Marketing, Sales Effectiveness, Internet and Direct Marketing, and Business to Business Marketing.  Marketing Internships are also available and encouraged.

What is the advantage of a Business Administration Major with a Marketing Option?

The Marketing Option within the Business Administration Major is a business program.  Graduating students will be well grounded not only in marketing but will also understand the principles of strategic planning, finance, management, information systems, economics, and, accounting and how these functions interact with marketing.  The marketing faculty within the College of Business and Economics are outstanding scholars who have had a wealth of industry, academic, and international experience. 

For what kinds of careers does the Marketing Option qualify its graduates?

Through proper selection of courses, a student may prepare for a career in general marketing management, brand management, marketing communications, international marketing, personal selling, marketing research, and/or retail management, internet marketing.   Alumni of the program are employed by all types and all sizes of organizations.  Among these are: Target Corp, Delta Airlines, General Mills, 3M, Northwestern Mutual Financial,  Securian Financial Group, and Walgreens 

Does the program offer other opportunities?

Marketing students may join the CBE Business Association, a student organization involved in a variety of professional development and social activities.  Qualifying students may also join Beta Gamma Sigma, an international honorary for business administration.

Learning Outcomes

A marketing graduate will be able to

  1. Effectively use the elements of the strategic marketing planning process to engage in SWOT analysis, market segmentation, targeting, positioning, and marketing mix development.

  2. Apply their in-depth understanding of social science theories relevant to consumer behavior in marketing decisions.

  3. Apply their understanding of marketing research concepts and techniques to solve marketing problems.

  4. Develop a formal strategic marketing plan.

Business Administration faculty members have appropriate graduate degrees and experience in the business world. They are active in research in human resources, product pricing models, advertising, securities valuation, and international competition. Faculty advise students in the selection of appropriate courses, career considerations, finding an internship, learning about overseas study programs, and conducting independent research projects.
