Collection Summary: Professor John A. Oostendorp joined the University of Wisconsin-River Falls faculty in 1958. He served as interim chairman of the department of speech, 1969-70; member of the departmental student welfare committee, 1970-72; member of the curriculum committee of the College of Arts and Sciences; committee of the returning faculty, 1974; member of the Judicial Review Board, 1969-70; and the Archives Advisory Board. He died in 1976. Boxes 1-12 contain professional papers; Box 13 contains personal papers.

John Anthony Oostendorp-Personal Papers-Box 13 of UWRF Series 72

Biography: John Anthony Oostendorp was born at West Liberty, Iowa on December 21, 1926. He married Elizabeth Kidd in 1957. He earned the B.A. and M.A. degrees in history at the University of Iowa in 1948 and 1949 and the Ph.D. degree in rhetoric and public address at the University of Iowa in 1965.

From 1950 until 1958 he taught at various universities and in 1958 joined the department of English faculty at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. He became the interim chairman of the department of speech and was a professor in the department of speech at his death. He was a member of many university committees during his career, and many professional organizations, as well. He died on October 15, 1976.

Scope: Box 13 contains miscellaneous personal material primarily relating to his years before he began teaching in River Falls in 1958. Much of the material consists of papers from his early teaching career. There are also student papers and some information on his father and grandmother.
