Draft environmental impact statement prepared by Ayres Associates for a 142,660 gross square foot New Student Union to be constructed on the site of the existing Ames Teacher Education Building. The new facility, budgeted at $28.4 million, will be designed and constructed with an emphasis on “green” architecture, with the intent of gaining a Silver rating in the US Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system. This will be the first building to achieve this level of recognition in the UW System.

The project site is located in the southwest corner of the campus in the Ramer Field, Hunt Arena, and Knowles Center athletic complex. The 14,365 square-foot building addition will occupy an area currently used as a manicured practice field. The proposed site is directly north of the northern wall of the W.H. Hunt Arena and directly east of the southeast corner of the Robert P. Knowles Physical Education and Recreation Center.
